Anerley, SE20

Anerley is a suburb of London in the London Borough of Bromley, England. It is located approximately 8.5 miles south east of Charing Cross and contains the former site of The Crystal Palace.

Anerley, along with Penge, was part of the Croydon Rural District of Surrey until the two were merged to form the Penge Urban District of Kent by the London Government Act 1899. Apart from being the name of the original house, a council ward and a railway station, Anerley is generally considered to be part of Crystal Palace. For some administrative purposes it is considered to be part of Penge. It has never existed as an administrative unit.
Prior to the relocation of The Crystal Palace to Penge Place (now part of the Crystal Palace Park) at the top of Sydenham Hill, Anerley was part of Penge Common. The London and Croydon Canal was built across Penge Common and a remnant remains in Betts Park in Anerley and another in Dacres Wood, Sydenham.
